Death sentence for student who murdered girlfriend
(Baonghean.vn)On September 28, 2011, the Supreme Court opened an appeal trial of defendant Le Ngoc Quan, born in 1991, a former student at Vinh Medical University, residing in Dao Nguyen hamlet, Nghia Dung commune, Tan Ky district, for the crime of "murder".
According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of Nghe An province, at about 9:45 p.m. on February 20, 2011, Quan brought a knife to the rented room of student Thai Thi Thanh (20 years old, residing in Lien Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district) to express his feelings. When rejected, Quan took out a knife and threatened to commit suicide. Thanh prevented him and said insulting words. In anger, Quan used a knife to stab Thanh in the stomach and cut her cheek and neck many times. After that, Quan used a knife to cut the main artery of her hand and stabbed himself in the stomach to commit suicide. Both were taken to the Friendship General Hospital for emergency treatment, but Thanh died on February 21, 2011.
After the first instance trial, the Provincial People's Procuracy requested the Supreme Court to reduce the defendant's sentence, and the legal representative of the victim also requested a reduction in the defendant's sentence. Considering that Quan's actions were particularly serious, the Supreme Court upheld the first instance verdict of the Nghe An Provincial People's Court, sentencing Quan (July 14, 2011) to death for murder; at the same time, Quan was forced to compensate the victim's family more than 100 million VND.
