Yen Thanh: Eradicating rats to protect summer-autumn rice crops.
(Baonghean.vn) -Currently, the summer-autumn rice crop in Yen Thanh district has finished tillering in flooded areas, while in marshy areas it is in the tillering stage. However, farmers are worried about the rat infestation destroying the rice crops in many communes, with a fairly high density.
According to a report from the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as of now, 10 communes have reported rat damage to rice crops: Lang Thanh, Hau Thanh, Hung Thanh, Hong Thanh, Phu Thanh, Trung Thanh, Bac Thanh, Khanh Thanh, etc. In response to this situation, Yen Thanh district has directed local authorities to proactively inspect and eradicate rats by using traps and bait across the fields.
Mr. Thai Khac Dung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Lang Thanh commune, said: "Since the beginning of June, rats have been damaging rice crops in fields such as Con Thong, Cua Leu, Lo Ngai, etc. Starting on June 10th, the commune assigned the Agricultural Cooperative to directly distribute pesticides, bait, and instruct farmers on how to trap and use bait safely across the fields. After three days of rat eradication, the entire commune collected nearly 60 kg of rats. Currently, the rat damage to rice crops has decreased; however, the commune continues to direct the Cooperative to monitor the situation of pests and diseases on rice plants, as well as the development of rats in the fields to proactively eradicate them."

Mr. Nguyen Huu Duc, a farmer from Nam Thanh commune, said: "My family has a rice field of over 3 sao (approximately 3,000 square meters) near the edge of the village. About half a month after planting, rats ate almost all of it, so we had to replant. After the second replanting, the rats continued to destroy the crop. My family has bought biological rat poison three times, spending 60,000 dong on bait traps. After each night, dozens of rats lie dead in the field."
The summer-autumn rice crop in Yen Thanh is currently in the tillering and finishing stages. If it is damaged by rats, it cannot recover, so local authorities are focusing on eradicating rats by all means.
