(Baonghean.vn) - Hoa Thanh is the first commune in Yen Thanh district to have an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu at Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan's household in hamlet 4. Currently, the commune is focusing on all measures and mobilizing forces to contain the epidemic and prevent it from spreading widely.

On February 11, at the household of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan in Hamlet 4, Hoa Thanh Commune, it was discovered that her family's flock of waterfowl was sick and died en masse for unknown reasons. Her family immediately reported to the Commune Veterinary Department to collect samples and immediately destroy 360 meat ducks according to the regulations of the veterinary law.

Hoa Thanh commune veterinarian promptly vaccinated poultry and waterfowl with H5N1 vaccine.

Ms. Thuan said: after destroying the duck flock, the family disinfected the barn every two days, sprinkled more lime powder, and combined waste treatment to keep the livestock area clean so that when the epidemic was declared over, they would continue to invest in livestock development.

Yen Thanh Veterinary Station provides enough chemicals to disinfect and sterilize the outbreak site.

According to statistics, Hoa Thanh commune currently has nearly 20 thousand poultry concentrated in 7 hamlets. After receiving the report from the Hoa Thanh commune veterinary board, the district veterinary station sent technical staff to coordinate with the commune to verify the situation and collect 3 samples to send to the veterinary agency of region 3 for testing. On February 15, 2014, the results were positive for the H5N1 virus. To control the spread of the disease, the functional sectors in the commune are currently focusing on epidemic prevention; the district veterinary station promptly provided 48 liters of benzyl benzyl ether to spray disinfectants in the entire livestock barn area, and provided 10 thousand doses of H5N1 vaccine for hamlet 4 and some neighboring hamlets to vaccinate poultry and waterfowl. In addition, the Commune People's Committee assigned the village veterinarian to regularly update the changes of the total herd, monitor the disease situation in the livestock herd in each household to have measures to deal with the disease.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Duc - Vice Chairman of Hoa Thanh Commune People's Committee said:After detecting the first outbreak in hamlet 4, in addition to focusing on destroying infected poultry and waterfowl, the commune immediately implemented measures to isolate and contain the outbreak; assigned the veterinary department to periodically spray disinfectants throughout the area, and at the same time mobilized people to keep poultry in captivity to vaccinate them to prevent the outbreak. Thanks to that, the outbreak has been controlled and has not appeared in other hamlets.

Along with the efforts of the local government, the district veterinary station is also actively strengthening the direction of epidemic suppression, controlling the outbreak from spreading widely, affecting the health of the community and livestock of the people. Mr. Phan Tuan Hai - Deputy Head of Yen Thanh district veterinary station added: In addition to implementing measures to isolate the epidemic area, the station has directed the People's Committee of Hoa Thanh commune to urgently post signs and set up checkpoints, strictly prohibiting people from transporting poultry and waterfowl in and out of the epidemic area. If there are violations, they will be strictly handled according to the provisions of the veterinary law.

However, a current difficulty is that there is not enough H5 N1 vaccine to provide to small-scale livestock households. If there is any, households have to pay for it themselves, while poultry in Hoa Thanh commune are mainly small-scale livestock and many households are still subjective in disease prevention. Although the H5N1 avian influenza epidemic in Hoa Thanh commune has been controlled, but with the complicated epidemic situation, in addition to the attention and direction of functional agencies, livestock farmers also need to raise awareness of disease prevention, in order to limit risks in livestock farming as well as protect the health of themselves, their families and the community./.
