Demanding China to strictly handle the act of ramming Vietnamese fishing boats
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a diplomatic note protesting the actions of Chinese ships threatening the lives of Vietnamese fishermen.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Luong Thanh Nghi
On May 20, 2013, fishing boat QNg 90917 TS of Quang Ngai province and 15 fishermen were conducting normal fishing activities in an area located entirely within Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf when they were obstructed by Chinese ships.
More seriously, Chinese ship numbered 264 rammed directly into fishing boat QNg 90917 TS, damaging the side of the ship and threatening the lives of fishermen on board.
Regarding Vietnam's response to this incident, on May 27, 2013, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Luong Thanh Nghi said: "Immediately after verification by the competent authorities, on May 26, 2013, a representative of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs met with a representative of the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi to hand over a diplomatic note protesting the above actions of the Chinese ships.
The actions of Chinese vessels have seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the East Sea, threatening the lives and causing property damage to Vietnamese fishermen. This action also goes against the Agreement on Basic Principles Guiding the Resolution of Maritime Issues between Vietnam and China, contrary to the spirit of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), further complicating the situation at sea.
Vietnam requests that China strictly handle the actions of the above-mentioned vessels, properly compensate Vietnamese fishermen, and prevent similar incidents from recurring.”/.
