17 people stole soybean residue and scrap steel on the ship
A group of crew members stole soybean oil residue and scrap iron and steel when they were hired to transport them from abroad to a port in Ba Ria - Vung Tau.
On July 27, the People's Court of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province sentenced Nguyen Kim Giao (40 years old, from Hanoi) to 12 years in prison for the crime ofAbuse of trust to appropriate property.
For the same crime, 15 other defendants received sentences ranging from 2 years suspended to 6 years in prison. Defendant Le Thi Bau (40 years old, from Binh Dinh) was sentenced to 7 years in prison for the crime ofi Consuming property obtained by another person through crime.

According to the indictment, at the end of April 2014, the ship Dai Duong Queen (Hai Phong) captained by Nguyen Kim Giao was hired to transport more than 7 thousand tons of soybean oil from China to Thi Vai general port (Phu My town) for a company in Ho Chi Minh City.
When the ship arrived at the sea south of Phu Quy Island (Binh Thuan), Giao directed the crew members on board to use a hand-held grinder to cut the chain sealing the cargo hold lid and steal more than 700 tons of soybean oil to sell to Le Thi Bau.
Four months later, Giao and his crew stole more than 123 tons of scrap steel from Pomina 3 Steel Company and sold it to Bau when the Dai Duong Queen ship was transporting goods from Singapore to Saigon International Port (SITV).
The amount of soybean oil and scrap steel stolen was worth more than 10 billion VND. However, the group of defendants said they sold a smaller amount to Bau, earning more than 1.3 billion VND and divided it among themselves for personal use.
