On the morning of May 9, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try the case of illegal drug transportation against Trinh Ngoc Dong (born in 1979, residing in Xuan Minh commune, Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa).

At 3:00 a.m. on December 25, 2015, on National Highway 48C in Yen Hoa Commune (Tuong Duong), the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department of the Provincial Police coordinated with the Traffic Control Patrol Team 1-48 to catch Trinh Ngoc Dong red-handed while illegally transporting 2 packages of crystal meth and synthetic drugs.

At the trial, Trinh Ngoc Dong confessed to the crime as stated in the indictment and said that the drugs mentioned above belonged to a person named Do Trong Hung (residing in Tho Lap commune, Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa) who asked Dong to keep them for him. Previously, on December 4, 2006, Trinh Ngoc Dong was sentenced by the People's Court of Giong Tom District (Ben Tre) to 9 months in prison for theft. On July 22, 2009, Dong was sentenced by the People's Court of Tho Xuan District (Thanh Hoa) to 15 months in prison for the same crime. On November 15, 2011, Trinh Ngoc Dong was sentenced by the People's Court of Tho Xuan District to 2 years in prison for extortion. Before his criminal record was cleared, Dong was arrested for the act of illegally transporting the above mentioned drugs.

The panel of judges determined that the People's Procuracy of Nghe An Province prosecuted Trinh Ngoc Dong for the crime of illegal drug transportation. Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Trinh Ngoc Dong to 20 years in prison for the above crime. Regarding Do Trong Hung, the authorities are currently continuing to investigate, consolidate evidence and will handle the case later.
