The flood has passed, but in the mountainous communes of Nghe An, many schools are still isolated; in many places, students and teachers are at risk of not being able to go to school due to prolonged isolation. Relief work and flood relief for schools before the new school year is still very difficult.

Mr. Tran Gia Thao - Principal of Muong Tip 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities said: Up to this point, the school has received rice and some boarding supplies. However, preparing for boarding for 150 ethnic minority students of the school is still difficult because they have lost all their personal belongings such as blankets, mats, mosquito nets, etc. The school has also lost all the supplies to organize boarding for students. Due to the isolated terrain, exactly one week after the historic flood passed, the cleaning work at the Buoc village school of Bac Ly Kindergarten (Bac Ly commune) was carried out in the form of "4 on-site", carried out by teachers and local people. To reach this school, from the main school, teachers have to walk 5 hours, a distance of 8 km. The landslide and isolation may continue, because currently there is no motor vehicle that can access it. Photo: CSCC

Many teaching aids at Bac Ly Kindergarten were damaged after the flood. Teacher Do Thi Nga - Principal of Bac Ly Kindergarten said that because it is located near a stream, when the flood passed, the entire classroom area was submerged in mud, some places were more than 1 meter high. Next to it was the kitchen area with boarding equipment that was completely swept away by the flood. Currently, the inside of the classrooms has been basically cleaned up and teachers have also tried to find some reusable items. But outside the classrooms, they have to wait for machinery support, it is not known when the cleaning and tidying work will be completed. Photo: NTCC

Located right on Route 7, Luu Kien Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (Tuong Duong Commune) is a newly invested and built school with spacious and synchronous facilities, including classrooms, functional rooms and boarding houses for students. Although located at a fairly high position, the recent flood caused the water to rise so quickly that it flooded the school, causing the classrooms to be submerged 1 meter deep and damaging many equipment and school supplies. Along with that, all the rice reserved for boarding students entering the new school year was also submerged in water. Photo: NTCC

Teachers at Luu Kien Ethnic Boarding Secondary School rearrange classrooms after the flood. Teacher Tran Quoc Duong - Principal of the school added: Up to this point, we have basically finished cleaning the classrooms, but all the desks, chairs, and beds for more than 200 students are almost beyond repair because they are made of plywood and have been submerged in water for too long. We are also drying 10 sets of computers, televisions, and interactive screens, but the possibility of reusing them is not high. Repurchasing facilities and teaching equipment is beyond the capacity of the school as well as parents and students. This is what we worry about most as the new school year is approaching. To support schools in mountainous areas damaged by floods, last weekend, the Department of Education and Training visited Tam Hop and Tuong Duong communes to assess the situation and hand over more than VND400 million in aid. In the photo: Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Khoa assesses the damage caused by floods at Xa Luong Secondary School, Tuong Duong commune. This school is located right next to the Nam Non River, so when it rained heavily, the rising river water flooded the entire row of level 4 buildings of the school. Of which, 9 classrooms and 1 English room were mostly damaged, with most of the desks, chairs, and teaching equipment. With only 1 month left until the start of the new school year, the school is worried that there will not be enough desks and chairs for students. Photo: My Ha
