7 years in prison for man who destroyed protective forest after 10 years on the run
(Baonghean.vn) - During the process of clearing the fields, Mai cut down all the trees and vegetation in the critical protective forest area. After 10 years on the run, Mai surrendered in November 2018.
On the morning of May 29, the People's Court of Ky Son district opened the first instance trial of the case of "Forest destruction" under the provisions of Article 189 of the 1999 Penal Code against defendant Vu Xia Mai (born in 1959), residing in Huoi Giang 1 village, Tay Son commune, Ky Son district.

The indictment stated: Around January 2008, Vu Xia Mai went alone to clear land in Lot 2, Section 14, Sub-area 458, in the important protective forest of Tay Son Commune. During the process of clearing land, Mai cut down all the trees and vegetation in this area.
After the incident, Tay Son Commune People's Committee reported to Ky Son District Protective Forest Management Board.
On January 24, 2008, the Ky Son District Protective Forest Management Board and the Inter-sectoral Working Group determined the location of the deforested forest at coordinates 04.07.271-21.35.740, the area of deforested forest was 16,300m2.2, the number of trees cut down was 112 with diameters from 10cm to 35cm. The Ky Son district property valuation council determined the damage caused by Vu Xia Mai to be 25,142,000 VND.
Vu Xia Mai then fled the locality and surrendered to the Ky Son District Police on November 3, 2018.
At the trial, Vu Xia Mai confessed and admitted all his crimes. After considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances and the proposal of the Procuracy, the panel sentenced Vu Xia Mai to 7 years in prison for the above crime.
