On July 4, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May said that the case of two people suspected of being poisoned near the city of Salisbury, southern England, is being handled very seriously.

The British Government's rapid response committee has convened a meeting to discuss the suspected poisoning.

"This is clearly an incident that is being treated extremely seriously. Ministers and the prime minister are being kept informed and officials have met this morning (local time) to receive updates on the incident and the situation on the ground," the official said.

Earlier, on the evening of June 30, police discovered a man and a woman, both around 40 years old, unconscious at a house on Muggleton Road, Amesbury, near Salisbury city, suspected of being infected with a mysterious substance.

The two victims are currently in critical condition and are being treated at Salisbury Town Hospital, 11km south of Amesbury.

Counter-terrorism officers are working with police to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, the British newspaper Sun reported on July 4 that these two people had been poisoned and had symptoms similar to those of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia who were poisoned last March.

The samples were sent to the Ministry of Defence's Porton Down laboratory, the newspaper said.

Previously, in March, in Salisbury, former double agent Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned. The British side said that a very small amount of liquid Novichok nerve agent was used in this incident.

Afterwards, although the investigation has not concluded, London said that this poison was made in Russia and accused Moscow of being behind the incident, at the same time calling on Western allies to expel hundreds of Russian diplomats.

So far, Russia has denied all accusations and also announced the expulsion of an equivalent number of diplomatic staff from many member countries of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)./.
