US President Donald Trump said he had an awkward moment while dining with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie Abe, as she remained completely silent throughout the meal.

In a separate interview with the New York Times, President Trump recounted sitting between Prime Minister Abe and his wife at dinner on July 8 at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. The White House boss described the conversation as not going well at all.

"I sat next to her, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife. I thought she was a wonderful woman. But she spoke absolutely no English," Mr. Trump told the New York Times.

President Trump claimed that Ms. Akie could not even say "hello" in English. The White House boss admitted that the two-hour dinner was a difficult time for him.

"There was an interpreter there, otherwise it would have been much more difficult," Mr. Trump shared.

However, the media said that Mr. Trump had misjudged the English ability of the Japanese Prime Minister's wife. In fact, Ms. Akie has repeatedly shown her ability to speak English very well at other events.

The Independent speculated that Ms. Abe pretended not to speak English because she did not want to talk to President Trump, a controversial politician.
