Baghdad: Third bombing in a month

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad, near a checkpoint in the northern part of the Iraqi capital, security forces said.

The attack left 12 people dead and 22 others injured.

Although no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities suspect it was the work of Sunni jihadists of IS.

It is known that IS regularly carries out attacks targeting the Shiite community - the community that makes up the majority of the population in Iraq.

In less than a month, Iraq has suffered three consecutive attacks.

The first incident took place on July 3 when an attacker blew himself up in a commercial area in the heart of Baghdad, where many people were shopping to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

The attack killed 292 people and injured 200, making it one of the deadliest in Iraq. IS has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Five days later, on July 8, 40 people were killed in an IS attack on a Shiite shrine in the city of Balad, 70 km north of Baghdad.

Starting in the summer of 2014, IS captured large parts of Iraq through lightning attacks.

However, after being supported by the US-led International Coalition against IS with airstrikes, the Iraqi government has regained most of its territory from IS.
