(Baonghean.vn) - The Puggye-ri nuclear test site, North Korea's only known test site, is now a thing of the past, as the country has officially dismantled the test site, marking the first step towards the goal of denuclearization.

The Puggye-ri nuclear test site, located in Kilku, North Hamgyong Province, is considered one of the most important facilities in North Korea's nuclear weapons program, along with the Yongbyon complex.
All six of North Korea’s nuclear tests have been conducted here, including the most powerful test in September last year. Surrounded by mountains more than 1,000 meters high and built into underground granite blocks, analysts say Puggye-ri has optimal geographical conditions to withstand the shock of explosions and minimize the risk of radiation leaks.
The test site has four underground tunnels, built to prevent gas or debris from being released in the event of a collapse. Multiple walls and locked doors are also installed to minimize the risk.

Experts say North Korea has destroyed a nuclear test site that is extremely important to the country itself. They also believe that the demolition of this test site will help strengthen the positive atmosphere, leading up to the long-awaited summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump next month.

“The Puggye-ri test site is where North Korea has been improving its nuclear capabilities. It is seen as a symbolic move to dismantle the site,” said Chang Cheol-un, a researcher at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University.
However, many experts believe that this demolition will not have a significant impact on Pyongyang's nuclear program. Others believe that North Korea has perfected nuclear technology and does not need to conduct any more tests./.
