Arrested a group impersonating police officers to defraud 8.7 billion VND

On April 19, the Department of Investigation Police on Economic Management and Corruption Crimes, Ho Chi Minh City Police, announced that it had just arrested 13 suspects in a ring impersonating police officers to defraud victims of a total of nearly VND8.7 billion.

According to initial investigation, in early 2016, Taiwanese subjects entered Vietnam as tourists. Among them, Liu En Hsiang (born in 1990, Taiwanese nationality, China) was the leader, directly contacting superiors in Taiwan to operate in Vietnam, directing other subjects to carry out the steps to commit fraud.

The group's modus operandi was to impersonate people from the postal service, call to collect phone debt, then continue to impersonate the police, the prosecutor's office, the bank... to threaten the victims that they are on the list of transnational criminals, money launderers, if they do not cooperate they may be arrested, their accounts will be frozen. After the victims transfer money into the account, they immediately have someone withdraw it. The total amount of money they appropriated was nearly 8.7 billion VND.
