The US and NATO really want to welcome Georgia (and Ukraine) into the common house, but in reality Washington and Brussels are having to find ways to turn these former Soviet countries into strategic buffer zones in the counterbalance against Russia.

On Monday, April 1, in an interview with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting during his visit to Georgia, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg continued to affirm NATO's stance of always considering Georgia as a future member.

Mr. Stoltenberg emphasized: "Georgia and NATO will decide together when Georgia should become a NATO member without any other party having the right to interfere. Russia does not have any say on Georgia's NATO membership."

The fact that Washington and Brussels want but cannot let Tbilisi and Kiev "sit at the same table" is seen as being offside in the face of President Putin's moves, as former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen himself admitted.

Mr. Rasmussen said that NATO was wrong in not granting Ukraine and Georgia early "NATO entry" status, hoping that Mr. Putin would pursue a foreign policy of appeasement to the West like his predecessor, Boris Yeltsin.
