Defending their child, two parents fought: one died, one went to jail.

Because his child was beaten by defendant Chau Thanh Long's son, Mr. Tam went to Long's house to talk. The two parents argued and then got into a fight. Defendant Long stabbed and beat Mr. Tam to death.

On November 10, the People's Court of Bac Lieu province held a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Chau Thanh Long - 46 years old, residing in Hamlet 19, Phong Thanh Commune, Gia Rai Town, Bac Lieu to 12 years in prison for murder.

The victim was Mr. Tran Van Tam (residing in Hamlet 19, Phong Thanh Commune, Gia Rai Town, Bac Lieu). The cause of this murder case was due to a conflict over defending his child.

The jury also ordered the defendant to compensate the victim's family for funeral expenses, compensate for mental damage, and provide for the victim's two children until they turn 18, at 2.5 million per month.

According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of Bac Lieu province, at about 10:00 p.m. on April 29, Mr. Tam drove to the defendant Long's house to talk about Long's son, Chau Cong Lap, beating Mr. Tam's son, Tran Nguyen Hao.

When arriving at defendant Long's house, Mr. Tam and Long and his wife had an argument.

Out of anger, Mr. Tam went home, took a sharp iron bar and a 39cm long knife and went to Long's house to beat Ms. Le Hong Thuy - Long's wife. When Mr. Tam arrived at Long's house, a fight broke out between the two sides.

Defendant Long used a homemade knife about 70cm long that was available in the house to slash Tam’s head and body many times. When the knife dropped, Long continued to use a 120cm long round metal tube found in the house to continue hitting Tam’s head and body.

Mr. Tam ran toward his house for about 10 meters and then fell on the street. He was taken to the emergency room but died.
