Patient died after bronchoscopy
During lung endoscopy to remove tumor for biopsy, the patient suddenly had respiratory failure, circulatory arrest, and then died.
On June 13, Ms. Bich was taken by her family to Bach Mai Hospital for examination due to respiratory abnormalities. After a chest CT scan, the doctor discovered a collapsed middle lobe of the right lung - middle lobe bronchiectasis, so she was ordered to undergo a bronchoscopy at the Respiratory Center. Before the endoscopy, the patient underwent all the necessary tests.

On the morning of June 14, during the procedure, the endoscopy team discovered a bronchial tumor and performed a biopsy on the patient. However, the patient suddenly developed a complication of severe bleeding in the bronchus. The patient suffered severe respiratory failure and circulatory arrest. The doctors performed emergency cardiac arrest and actively intubated the patient, after which the patient's heart started beating again. The hospital held a hospital-wide consultation to assess the patient's condition and continue with intensive resuscitation techniques.
At noon of the same day, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. At that time, the patient continued to suffer from circulatory arrest, and despite intensive care, he did not survive.

When performing endoscopy, the patient may have an accident, even death during the procedure. Therefore, before performing the procedure, the doctor must consult and explain carefully to the patient; the family must sign a commitment.
The hospital will hold a professional council meeting to review the implementation of professional procedures and the cause of the patient's death."We will seriously handle any violations if we discover them," Dr. Hung affirmed.
