The technique of "taking and transplanting kidneys from living people and brain-dead donors" has become a routine practice and has been a great success for Nghe An General Hospital and the Nghe An health sector.

The joy of being reborn

These days, Mr. Cao Manh C. (born in 1990, residing in Ky Lien ward, Ky Anh town, Ha Tinh province) is living in joy and happiness with new dreams and ambitions. The thing is, Mr. C. has just been "reborn", freed from the pain of a lingering illness.

Mr. C. said: “For the past 3 years, I have been suffering from end-stage chronic kidney failure. In addition, I also have other underlying diseases such as hepatitis C, high blood pressure, anemia, and heart failure. Pain, high blood pressure, and shortness of breath still come frequently; there have been times when my blood pressure spikes up to 220/120 mmhg... 3 times a week, regardless of rain or shine, storms, I have to wake up early in the morning and travel from Ky Anh to Vinh City to be on time for dialysis. There were times when I felt like a burden and useless, I thought, “If only I died, my wife and 2 children would suffer less. My wife alone has to work hard to take care of her husband's medical treatment and raise the children.”

Then, the miracle came to Cao Manh C. That was the matter.Nghe An General Hospitalhas mastered and been recognized as qualified to perform kidney removal and transplant techniques. With great hope and boundless love, C.'s sister, Cao Thi Hong D. (born in 1988), brought her younger brother to Nghe An General Hospital to express her wish to donate a kidney to save him...

Sympathizing with the wishes of the family of Ms. Cao Thi Hong D. and Mr. Cao Manh C, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Huong - Director of Nghe An General Hospital directly made a detailed plan to carry out this kidney transplant. Specifically, the Hospital focused on mobilizing maximum human and material resources; with the full participation of staff trained in kidney transplant by Viet Duc Hospital... to perform the kidney transplant technique right at Nghe An General Hospital.

For the health of the patient

It is known that before Mr. Cao Manh C., Nghe An General Hospital had successfully performed 2 other kidney transplants. The first kidney transplant took place in October 2020, from two identical twins. The donor was Phan Van H.'s older brother and the recipient was Phan Van N. (with end-stage chronic kidney failure on dialysis for 1 year)... The second kidney transplant took place in January 2021. The donor was Truong Thi Ngoc M.'s younger sister and the recipient was Truong Van H.'s older brother with end-stage chronic kidney failure on dialysis for 2 years.

According to Nghe An General Hospital: Every year, there are more than 1,700 patients examined and treated at the Hospital with chronic kidney failure, many of whom are in the final stage of the disease and need dialysis, with an average of more than 21,000 dialysis sessions per year. Cases requiring regular dialysis not only greatly affect the health and life expectancy of the patient, but also cause great economic losses for the patient as well as the State budget.

To help patients with chronic kidney failure, Nghe An General Hospital has developed a kidney transplant project and sent staff to train in kidney transplant at central hospitals across the country such as Cho Ray Hospital, Hospital 198 and abroad. From 2015 to present, Nghe An General Hospital has actively implemented human resource training programs, renovated infrastructure, and equipment to serve the implementation of kidney transplant techniques.
