Mr. Nguyen Song H., 65 years old, occasionally felt sharp pain from the third finger of his right hand, especially when he touched it. After each pain, he continued his normal activities so he did not pay attention and went to the doctor. However, the pain gradually appeared more and more continuously and spread, so Mr. H. went to Vinh International Hospital for examination.
Through clinical examination, the doctor discovered a dark blue nodule under the nail of the third finger of the right hand, and pain appeared when snapping the fingertip. To make an accurate diagnosis, the doctors ordered an ultrasound and MRI scan, the results showed that the patient had a glomus tumor under the nail of the third finger of the right hand. Surgical treatment is the only option once a definitive diagnosis has been made.

Doctor CK II Luong Tu Hai Thanh - Vinh International Hospital said: “Globe tumor is a rare disease, so many doctors, including specialists, often miss it. The main symptom of the disease is pain that starts when the fingertips and toes are stimulated by mechanical or temperature. This is a sharp pain that spreads from the tip of the limb where the glomus tumor is located towards the base of the limb, the pain gradually decreases and ends quickly; it will recur when there is a new stimulus. Patients have absolutely no pain when there is no stimulus, so they do not pay much attention to their condition.”

Common symptoms are sharp pain under the nail, especially when touched, and streaks on the nail. If left for a long time, a large tumor can cause severe pain and reduced mobility. The disease can recur, but if the entire tumor is removed, the risk is lower.
“Early-stage glomus tumors are often difficult to diagnose because the lesions are small and the clinical manifestations are not yet clear, so they are often detected late. Therefore, patients should seek medical examination and treatment if they have any unusual signs of health,” Dr. Hai Thanh advised.

Glomus tumors under the nails are quite common, can occur in both fingers and toes. If not detected early and treated promptly, large tumors cause severe pain and reduced motor function. There is currently no way to prevent glomus tumors. On the other hand, the early symptoms of the disease are similar to other diseases such as tendon sheath tumors, neuromas, subungual inflammation... Therefore, when there are symptoms of sharp pain under the nails, especially when touched, the nails have stripes... the patient should go to the right specialist early to treat the tumor.
