'Golden coin pumpkin' brings in 100 million/ha of income

(Baonghean.vn) - After more than 2 months of building a pumpkin production model on two-rice land associated with product consumption, people in Quynh Giang commune (Quynh Luu - Nghe An) have harvested, bringing high economic value.

Participating in the model, Mr. Trinh Chiem in Hamlet 8, Quynh Giang Commune planted 4 sao of golden coin pumpkins. According to the instructions, he planted 500 pumpkins per sao. In the early stages of growth, the plants were affected by some pests such as yellow leaf beetles, green worms, green leafhoppers... He monitored and fertilized with manure, NPK fertilizer, nitrogen, and organic microbial fertilizers scientifically.

Thanks to appropriate investment and a guaranteed source of irrigation water, the plants grow and develop well; it is estimated that one sao of pumpkin yields 1 ton of fruit; with a selling price of 7,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, Mr. Chiem earns a profit of 20 million VND.

Ms. Tran Thi Nhan - office staff working at Quynh Giang Commune People's Committee, together implemented and planted 2 sao of golden coin pumpkin varieties.

After attending the training sessions, Ms. Nhan planted according to the correct process of spacing plants 40 cm apart, spreading straw in the middle of the bed to support the squash to prevent it from coming into contact with the soil, while also creating fertility, porosity and humus in the soil, limiting the growth of weeds.

According to Ms. Nhan, growing pumpkin on two-rice land is quite simple, requires little care, and can be harvested in just 65-70 days. On average, each plant produces 3 fruits, weighing nearly 1kg/fruit; the total income is nearly 9 million VND.

The model of growing pumpkins of the golden coin variety is deployed on an area of ​​2.5 hectares concentrated in the fields of hamlets 9 and 10 with 24 households participating in planting. Of which, nearly 40% is the area of ​​the commune People's Committee staff. According to initial calculations, 1 hectare of growing this pumpkin variety gives a net profit of about 100 million VND.

Households participating in the model are supported by the commune with 700,000 VND/sao, including seeds and fertilizers. During the production process, people are trained by agricultural officers and enterprises that supply seeds and purchase products on technical processes from soil preparation to scientific care and fertilization measures to help the trees produce more fruit.

Mr. Le Van Huu - Director of Quynh Giang Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative said that the Cooperative directly checks weekly to grasp the growth, development and pests on squash plants. Through monitoring, it is seen that this is a good model, hoping that the commune will continue to plan production areas, propagate and mobilize people to implement the model to create a sustainable development direction for the commune's agricultural sector.
