In the first "heated" debate between US presidential candidates Trump and Biden, Mr. Trump seemed to lose his advantage to Mr. Biden...

So the first debate for the election2020 US Presidential Electionhas ended. Candidate Donald Trump (current US President) chose the tactic of harshly criticizing his opponent personally from the beginning instead of going into substantive debates.

Candidate Biden was repeatedly "interrupted" by Mr. Trump

Mr. Trump repeatedly interrupted Mr. Biden's speech. However, former US Vice President Joe Biden still showed that he had the advantage in this debate, held on the evening of September 29 (US time) in Cleveland, Ohio.

Biden's calm advantage

Biden appeared calm, composed, and composed for most of the 90 minutes of the debate. Not only did he remain composed, but he also showed the demeanor of a presidential candidate with vision at times.

Although Mr. Biden occasionally lacked fluency, perhaps due to a childhood stutter that he later largely overcame, Mr. Trump generally gave Mr. Biden only a couple of difficult moments in that debate.

Biden pushed back against Trump’s attempts to bring up his son Hunter’s business dealings with China and Ukraine. But Biden then gave Trump a chance to return to the topic when he mentioned his other son Beau’s service in Iraq. Trump then brought it back to Hunter, Ukraine, and China.

Trump also raised the issue of Black Lives Matter protests. Biden was largely left confused. Biden probably won’t win the law enforcement vote, despite his clear opposition to violent protests.

Candidate Trump's unimpressive appearance

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump still has some shortcomings. First, in terms of clothing, Mr. Trump does not seem to make a strong impression. He also seems to wear a lot of makeup and that makeup is covered with sweat.

Mr Trump's appearance was said to be poor, possibly due to lack of sleep since the weekend, when the New York Times began revealing his leaked tax information.

Appearances are important at events like this. In 1960, candidate Richard Nixon looked very unflattering under the television lights during a debate with the young, elegant candidate John F. Kennedy. Kennedy was later elected President of the United States.

Biden attacks Trump on Covid-19 issue

The moderator of the debate, Chris Wallace (from Fox News), had to try to stop Mr. Trump from constantly interrupting Mr. Biden. At one point, Wallace had to complain to the current President: “Frankly, you interrupted more.”

It seems that Mr. Trump has not yet made much effort to change the minds of the majority of American voters about him. He has not yet escaped the public image of him as a real estate businessman.

Meanwhile, candidate Biden has exploited this, comparing the crowded, noisy rallies of Mr. Trump's side without masks to the small-scale gatherings of the Democratic Party, ensuring social distancing and mask-wearing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In response to Mr. Biden's attack, Mr. Trump nonchalantly retorted that "if you had as many supporters as I do, you would do the same thing." It seemed that Mr. Trump did not notice that this statement could confirm Mr. Biden's accusation that the current US President only cares about what benefits himself more than the threat of the Covid-19 epidemic to the health of Americans.

This first televised debate between Mr Trump and Mr Biden was characterized by a lack of foreign policy – an issue that could be debated extensively in subsequent ones.
