US President Donald Trump yesterday signed an executive order directing officials to begin "planning, designing, and constructing a physical wall along the southern border" with Mexico, according to CNN. A survey from Morning Consult/Politico showed that 47% of respondents supported building a wall, 45% opposed. Experts are skeptical about whether the wall would actually help stop immigrants or just cost billions of dollars. Pictured is the border fence dividing the Nogales area, the right side belongs to Mexico and the left side belongs to the state of Arizona, US. |

The Rio Grande River runs along part of the US-Mexico border, near McAllen, Texas. CNN reporter Gregory Krieg describes it as "a natural boundary and a strong link between the cities and towns on both sides since 1848. Trade in the area is booming and people from both countries travel back and forth relatively freely." |

Border fence separating the US and Mexico in California. Restricting immigration was a major campaign issue for Trump. He wants to build a wall along the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border between the US and Mexico. Trump said last year that the wall would be about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) long due to the terrain of the border. |

The 15-foot-high (4.5 m) fence that runs through the Algodones Sand Dunes in California is often called the “flying fence” because it moves with the sand when the wind blows. According to border officials, immigrants and drug traffickers attempt to cross it every day. |

In Tijuana, Mexico, the fence extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean. US President Donald Trump has pledged to make Mexico pay for the wall. However, the Mexican government has repeatedly said it will not do so. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on the evening of January 25 that he "regrets and disagrees" after US President Donald Trump ordered the speedy construction of a wall on the 3,200 km (2,000 mile) border between the two countries to stop illegal immigration. |
