Many US soldiers in South Korea and their families received fake text messages on September 21 saying an evacuation order had been issued on the Korean peninsula, Stars and Stripes reported yesterday.
According to a spokesman for the US Forces Korea (USFK), the false alert was sent via text messages and Facebook, referring to a non-combatant evacuation (NEO) operation that is expected to affect family members of 28,500 US military personnel stationed in South Korea and US Department of Defense civilian employees.
However, the USKF was notified of the fake messages just one hour after they were distributed and promptly corrected them to service members.
The USKF still regularly conducts NEO exercises on a biennial basis, but no actual evacuation orders have been issued since the end of the Korean War (1953-1954).
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, with both sides issuing harsh statements against each other. The USFK's cybersecurity division is investigating the incident.
