Brazil: Appointment of New Central Bank Governor
(Baonghean.vn) - On May 17, Brazil officially appointed Mr. Ilan Goldfajn as the head of the Central Bank of Brazil. Mr. Goldfajn is currently the economic director at Itau Unibanco bank.
Mr. Goldfajn will represent the Central Bank of Brazil at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB), tasked with steering South America's largest economy through the country's worst political crisis in decades.

Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles said Mr Goldfajn would announce the other members of the central bank's board as soon as they are formally approved by the Senate. Until then, current Governor Alexandre Tombini will continue to work at the central bank.
Mr Meirelles was appointed Brazil's finance minister last week after interim President Michel Temer took office. At a news conference in the capital Brasilia, the new minister said Brazil would gradually regain investors' confidence with its reforms and policies.
Previously, Brazil's central bank forecast that the country's economy would shrink by 3% this year.
Mr Meirelles said Brazil would introduce new taxes, against the wishes of most protesters, politicians and businesses who support Ms Rousseff's impeachment.
Although Mr. Temer's Democratic Movement Party has been in government since 2005, Mr. Meirelles said a full assessment of the health of Brazil's economy was still needed to come up with specific growth stimulus measures.
Mr Meirelles called in Mansueto Almeida, a critic of government spending, to assess the state of the Brazilian economy. Mr Almeida previously worked with presidential candidate Aecio Neves during the 2014 campaign.
