Nearly 200 hectares of rice in Quynh Luu area were destroyed by heavy rain in recent days. |
According to preliminary statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district, as of September 13, the entire district had only harvested more than 1,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, behind schedule due to weather conditions. The impact of heavy rain and whirlwinds caused nearly 200 hectares of rice that were about to be harvested in the district to collapse and be flooded.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: Currently, more than 3,000 hectares of rice of the people have not been harvested due to bad weather. The district has issued an official dispatch requesting the communes to direct people to take advantage of all the best conditions to harvest rice with the motto "green house is better than old field".
Heavy rain is forecasted in the coming days, and farmers are currently gathering in the fields to harvest rice. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung in Quynh Hau commune said, “My family grows 4 sao of rice, and yesterday’s heavy rain caused more than 1 sao to collapse. If we don’t harvest, the rice will soak in water for a long time and spoil, so our family has to finish harvesting, cover it on the bank, and wait for the sun to dry before bringing it home to dry.”

Many vegetable areas in some communes specializing in vegetable cultivation were also damaged by heavy rain. |
As for communes specializing in vegetable production such as Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong, Quynh Bang, Quynh Van, etc., due to the impact of continuous heavy rain over the past 2 days, some newly planted vegetable areas were damaged. Therefore, in addition to harvesting vegetables in the rain, local people actively used measures to clear the flow in the fields to limit damage caused by floods.
In Dien Chau, there are still about 3,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice that cannot be harvested, partly because of heavy rain, partly because some rice areas are still green. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has caused about 100 hectares of rice to fall, concentrated in communes such as Dien Hoa, Dien Hanh, Dien Phuc, Dien Nguyen...
To overcome the problem of sprouting and spoiling rice, farmers erected trees and tied them into bundles in green rice fields, and drained all the water in the fields to prevent the rice from being flooded. Farmers quickly harvested the ripe rice fields.

For the 3,200 hectares of winter crops on fertile soil that were closed at the end of August, the rains of the past few days have also affected productivity. In Dien Thinh commune, thanks to early planting, 300 hectares of winter peanuts are currently in the flowering period. To limit damage to crops, since September 13, Dien Thinh has notified people to focus on draining the fields. The commune has also discharged the drainage culverts through the dike to drain water into the sea, while preventing saltwater from entering through the culverts.
In Dien Thanh commune, in addition to the area of corn, peanuts, and vegetables sown early, farmers have now started growing kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower, etc. Farmers have also covered with straw and stretched nets to protect vegetables.
In the face of continuing floods, on September 13, the People's Committee of Dien Chau district sent a telegram to communes, urging them to harvest summer-autumn rice and protect winter crops; directing people to take advantage of the dry weather to urgently harvest summer-autumn rice. To speed up the harvest, Dien Chau farmers invested in buying new and renting 40 combine harvesters to directly harvest rice in the fields. In addition, about 200 hand harvesters were also mobilized to speed up the progress. In addition, for the past 2 days, 19 sluices through the sea dike have been operating at full capacity, releasing water day and night to prevent plants from being flooded.
At Nam Dan, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds on September 12 and 13 flooded 800/6,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice that was entering the ripening stage of local farmers. Many rice fields were deeply flooded, at risk of total loss if it continues to rain in the next few days.
Faced with that situation, Nam Dan district mobilized people to take advantage of the rain to go to the fields to harvest rice. Because the rice was lying flat, people in low-lying areas had to harvest by hand, while in high-lying areas, combine harvesters were forced to go to the fields to ensure the harvest progress; minimizing damage caused by heavy rain.
At the same time, focus on directing communes to quickly drain water in the fields to avoid long-term flooding, causing damage to winter crop production, especially winter corn, and minimizing crop damage.
