Communes along the Lam River proactively respond to Typhoon No. 5.
Following directives from higher authorities, as of the afternoon of August 24th, communes along the Lam River at high risk of flooding have proactively implemented comprehensive measures to prevent and mitigate the effects of Typhoon No. 5 (Kajiki).
On the afternoon of August 24th in Lam Thanh commune (formerly Hung Nguyen district), heavy rain poured down. Members of the commune's Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Committee went to the hamlets to disseminate information and encourage people to implement storm prevention measures. In Hamlet 9, the commune's militia, in coordination with local people, trimmed the branches of old trees.

The banyan tree was large, with a wide canopy and branches, posing a risk of falling during strong winds. The People's Committee of the commune had to mobilize more than 20 people, including militia and local residents, along with an excavator to carry out the pruning. At the same time, tall trees with many wide branches were also pruned to minimize the risk.Typhoon No. 5cause.

According to Mr. Le Khanh Quang, Vice Chairman of the Lam Thanh Commune People's Committee, today (August 24th), along with pruning trees, the commune directed the hamlets to dredge and clear canals to prevent and combat flooding; and to educate and mobilize people to reinforce their houses, place sandbags on roofs, and relocate households in low-lying areas to safe locations.

In particular, the commune's public address system continuously broadcast directives from higher levels, updated information on Typhoon No. 5, and solutions to minimize damage. Thanks to this, typhoon prevention and control efforts were implemented promptly, especially in hamlets outside the Ta Lam dike area.

Mr. Le Khanh Quang stated: “Having determined that Typhoon No. 5 would make landfall in the area and bring heavy rain, the commune leaders have simultaneously implemented various measures to prevent and mitigate the effects of the typhoon; preparing to evacuate people from dangerous areas, especially the elderly living alone. The goal is to minimize damage to houses and the power grid; protect agricultural production; and prevent flooding in low-lying areas…”

Similar to Lam Thanh commune, Thien Nhan commune (formerly part of Nam Dan district) has actively and promptly implemented measures to respond to typhoon No. 5.Disaster prevention and control- The commune's search and rescue team inspected and reviewed dilapidated houses at risk of collapse to reinforce them, and encouraged residents to trim trees along village roads and within the premises of households.

At the same time, inform the public about the developments of typhoon No. 5, strictly prohibit collecting firewood, fishing, digging for rats and crickets in rivers, ponds, lakes, and dams... which endanger lives, and prohibit all forms of net fishing at dams and drainage gates.
Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thien Nhan commune, said: “We will closely monitor the developments of the storm and floods caused by its remnants. We will organize the updating of complete and timely information on the natural disaster situation so that people can proactively respond and ensure safety; we will disseminate and guide people on response measures and skills, especially for strong winds, flooding, and landslides. We will prepare manpower, materials, vehicles, and equipment to proactively deploy when incidents or situations occur according to the "four on-the-spot" principle. We will review and prepare plans for evacuating people from dangerous areas.”
Besides Lam Thanh and Thien Nhan communes, as of now, communes located along the Lam River in Hung Nguyen and Nam Dan (formerly) districts have promptly implemented measures to respond to Typhoon No. 5. With the efforts of the local authorities and people, it is hoped that the damage caused by the typhoon will be minimized.
