Using hot oil on the soles of the feet and going to bed is a method many people use to treat coughs. However, this folk method has many things to note.

According to medical literature, coughing is a natural reflex of the body to expel foreign objects, which can be mucus or bacteria residing in the airways. It is a common sign of common colds caused by respiratory infections.

Folk medicine has a simple way to treat this persistent cough, mainly warming the foot area by rubbing hot oil on the soles of the feet. This method is considered by many to be effective because it is very effective in treating coughs caused by colds that often occur in winter.

Recently, an American study concluded that foot massage is not only good for that area but also very good for other parts of the body. At the same time, massaging the soles of the feet also helps the body relax more.

Psychologist Dr. Lynne Jordan says that this home remedy for coughs actually works for some people because it reduces stress. When stress is reduced, so are the coughing, wheezing, and discomfort.

Besides many opinions that curing coughs by applying oil to the soles of the feet is very effective, Ms. Le Thi Linh, 25 years old, (Tay Son, Dong Da, Hanoi) said: "In the past, I also applied essential oil to the soles of my feet to cure coughs but it did not work. In winter, my feet are often very cold, applying oil only warms them up. It may depend on each person's physical condition or the severity of the cough."

Discussing this issue, physician Vu Quoc Trung said:“It is possible to cure a cough by rubbing oil on the soles of the feet. However, it depends on the type of oil applied. On the human body, the feet have a very close connection with the internal organs. Specifically, the little toe is related to the bladder, the second toe is related to the stomach, the fourth toe is related to the liver, the big toe is related to the liver and spleen, the sole of the foot is especially related to the health of the kidneys.

Treating coughs by massaging pain relievers under the soles of the feet is only effective for coughs caused by colds. Suppose on cold autumn and winter days, you suddenly feel a cough, it is very likely that you have a cough due to colds and using this method can quickly reduce the cough.

In cases of chronic cough such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or long-term cough that does not go away, this method should not be used.

He also noted that this treatment should not be abused for children. When using the oil, be sure to use a specific pain-relieving oil. It is best for children with coughs to be examined carefully by a doctor, and not to buy medicine for them to take. In particular, in the winter, parents should warm the soles of their children's feet to help increase blood circulation.
