Good ways to prevent drowning in Anh Son

(Baonghean.vn)- With many large rivers and streams flowing through, drowning prevention for children in Anh Son district is given regular attention and practical measures, aiming at ensuring safety.

Anh Son district has 3 big rivers flowing through it, including Lam river, Con river and Giang river, and not to mention hundreds of big and small streams in almost all communes. Before 2007, drowning happened quite often, almost every year there were more than 10 cases, causing tragic deaths.

Lam River and many other rivers and streams flow through the area, so Anh Son district always has the potential risk of drowning, especially for young children.

The subjects who often drown are primary and secondary school students, often occurring during the summer vacation. This is always a concern, worry and anxiety not only for parents but also for teachers and the community. From this situation, the Anh Son Education Department decided to focus on teaching life skills, especially drowning prevention skills for students.

The swimming pool system worth more than 300 million VND of teacher Bui Hong Thai (teacher of Cam Son Secondary School - Anh Son) attracts hundreds of students to practice drowning prevention skills during the summer.

At first, during the summer vacation, the Education Department organized swimming lessons for children by using bamboo rafts to form a raft, surrounding an area in the middle of Lam River as a location. However, this method was both costly and not very safe, so in the following years, the Department coordinated with the District Youth Union to rent a swimming pool of Regiment 335 (stationed in Tuong Son commune) to instruct and practice swimming techniques for students.

The organization of learning at the 335 Regiment swimming pool every summer vacation attracts hundreds of students to participate, the lessons are exciting. Since 2015, the leaders of the district's education sector have encouraged teachers to build a swimming pool system to organize drowning prevention skills training for children. Up to now, the first person to respond is Mr. Bui Hong Thai - a teacher at Cam Son Secondary School. In 2015, Mr. Thai invested more than 300 million VND to build a swimming pool system, purchase swimming equipment and goggles to serve students who need to practice. Over 2 summer vacations, he has trained more than 100 students to master swimming skills, and can handle situations on their own when encountering an accident.

During practice, children are also equipped with life jackets and glasses to ensure safety.

Not only students in Cam Son area, but also neighboring communes such as Tuong Son, Dinh Son, Hoa Son and Hung Son also come to study. Each swimming course is organized for 20 sessions with a tuition fee of 500,000 VND, most parents who let their children attend the class are satisfied with the results achieved as well as the prescribed tuition fee.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Vinh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Anh Son district, said: "Since organizing classes on drowning prevention skills, the number of drowning incidents has decreased significantly, from 10-12 incidents per year to 1-2 incidents. We are continuing to mobilize organizations, individuals and teachers to build swimming pools and expand the model of training on drowning prevention skills."
