A man wearing a bucket hat, t-shirt, and cropped jeans... stole more than 6,000 USD and took 130 million VND from a gold shop in Long Ho district, Vinh Long. |
Images extracted from the gold shop's security camera show that at 1:00 p.m. on April 27, a man about 37 years old, wearing a floppy hat, a T-shirt, cropped jeans, riding a Sirius motorbike with a Tien Giang province license plate... came to Huynh Co gold shop to agree to pawn an 18K gold necklace weighing 22 taels and 6,600 USD, each bill worth 100 USD, to receive 160 million VND.
An hour later, this person returned to pay 160,000 VND in interest to redeem the USD and the necklace. The gold shop owner Huynh Thi Hong Lan received the 160 million VND back and put it in the closet.
After the phone call, the customer turned to the gold shop owner and said, "There's a big cockfight," and asked Ms. Lan to keep the USD. Because she didn't suspect anything, Ms. Lan gave him 130 million VND.
After the customer got on the motorbike and left, Ms. Lan checked the stack of USD and found only one bill with a face value of 100 USD, the remaining 65 bills had a face value of 2 USD.
"This is not a new scam, but the mastermind prepared a scenario in advance while the gold shop owner was not vigilant and was too trusting, so he fell into the trap," said Colonel Tran Van Thang - Head of Long Ho District Police, adding that they are currently searching for the scammer.
