Young man stabbed to death while trying to stop woman from being teased

On the morning of June 9, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of Nguyen Dinh Canh (born 2000), Nguyen Dinh Thai (born 1999), both residing in Dien Trung commune, Dien Chau, for the crime of "Murder", Hoang Van Quyet (born 1997), residing in Hau Thanh commune, Yen Thanh, and Ho Cong Quan (born 1998), residing in Dien Trung commune, Dien Chau, for the crime of "Disturbing public order".

At noon on July 31, 2016, Quyet invited his friends to his house to celebrate his new house. After eating, the group of young men went to sing karaoke. During the singing, Mai Huy Hanh teased Ms. Ha, leading to a conflict. At this time, Tran Dinh Hieu came to stop them.

Hoang Van Quyet was outside the karaoke room, heard that Ha was being teased so he went in. Seeing Hieu standing next to Ha, he thought Hieu was the one teasing her so Quyet and Hieu got into an argument.

Suddenly, Nguyen Dinh Canh stabbed Hieu in the back. When Hieu ran away, Nguyen Dinh Thai and Ho Cong Quan beat him with their hands. When they caught up, Canh used a switchblade to stab Hieu in the back, causing him to collapse. At this time, Thai used a broom handle to hit him and kicked him. After committing the crime, the group fled and were arrested that same afternoon.

The victim, Tran Dinh Hieu, was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead from a stab wound to the lung. At the time of the crime, Nguyen Dinh Canh and Nguyen Dinh Thai were just over 16 years old.

At court, the defendants admitted their crimes. After the incident, Nguyen Dinh Canh's family voluntarily compensated the victim's family 51 million VND, and Nguyen Dinh Thai's family compensated 32 million VND.

Considering the entire case, the People's Court sentenced Nguyen Dinh Canh to 10 years in prison, Nguyen Dinh Thai to 7 years in prison, Hoang Van Quyet to 15 months in prison, and Ho Cong Quan to 6 months in prison.

In addition, the two defendants Canh and Thai and their families must be responsible for compensating the victims a total of nearly 160 million VND.
