The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization "will not disappear" but may join forces with al-Qaeda to form a more brutal terrorist force.

The above is the warning of the Director of the Central Judicial Investigation of Morocco (BCIJ), published by the British news agency Express. Mr. Abdelhak Khiame said that IS has not disappeared despite being pushed out of Iraq and Syria.

"IS is not gone. Its fighters are scattered to the Sahel-Saharan countries or to Syria. They choose areas that are in turmoil. However, their presence poses a direct threat not only to Morocco but to the entire region," said Mr. Khiame.

The official said that a link between IS and al-Qaeda could not be ruled out. "This is a dangerous possibility. Remember that al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb controls large swathes of territory in southern Algeria and northern Mali," he warned, adding that despite their differences, the two groups have many similarities, both fighting for the same ideals.

Mr Khiame said Morocco had increased border security and introduced biometric passports after discovering that about 1,600 of its citizens had fled to Iraq or Syria to join the jihad with IS.
