Conjoined twins share one heart

Two baby girls were born on July 2 in India, conjoined from chest to abdomen, weighing a total of 3.5 kg, and most likely cannot be separated surgically.

The twins share the same heart, beat at the same rhythm, and are currently in stable health. Doctors say it is unlikely that the babies can be separated surgically.

"Separation is almost impossible in such cases because the two babies share some vital organs, the chances of survival after surgery become less," the doctor said.

Currently, the rate of conjoined twins is one in 50,000 to 60,000 births, of which about 70% of cases are girls. About 75% of conjoined twins are at least partially joined at the chest and share some body parts.

If the twins have separate body parts, the chance of surgical separation and survival is greater than if they share many organs. In principle, conjoined twins with a heart cannot be separated.
