United Russia Party's overwhelming victory
The United Russia Party today (September 19) declared an overwhelming victory in the election for the State Duma, the Russian lower house of parliament.
The party made the statement after the majority of votes were counted.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the election results showed the political maturity of the Russian people.

The Russian Central Election Commission said on September 19 that with 93% of the votes counted, the ruling United Russia party won with 54.21% of the votes. The Communist Party of Russia came in second, with 13.53% of the votes. The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia came in third, with a close 13.28% of the votes. The Fair Russia party came in fourth, with 6.19% of the votes. No new party broke the 5% threshold to be represented in the 7th Russian Duma.
Immediately after the latest vote count results, the United Russia Party declared victory.
Speaking to the press at the headquarters of the United Russia party, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev affirmed that now is the time for the United Russia party to completely declare an overwhelming victory.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the election results show that Russian society is voting in favor of political stability. According to the Russian President, the current situation in Russia is extremely difficult and the Russian people feel that and all want Russia to have stability in both society and the political system.
“Russia is in difficult times, but the Russian people voted for United Russia. I think this speaks for itself. First of all, the election results showed that representatives of United Russia really did their best for the Russian people. Not everything was successful, but United Russia tried their best. The election results also showed the political maturity of the Russian people,” Putin said.
