Mr. Tran Huy Hai, Chairman of Vu Thu District People's Committee, said that the ship carrying about 80 tons of rock and clinker was moving downstream on the river. The location of the sinking was about 400m from Huu Bi ferry terminal, Vu Thu district.
Mr. Hoang Hong Giang, Director of the Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration (Ministry of Transport), said: The initial cause of the accident was determined to be that the NB 2434 ship was carrying rocks at high speed to overtake two larger ships (NB 6661 and NB 6913) traveling in the same direction.
Due to the reverse current, ship NB 2434 could not control the situation, crashed into ship NB 6661 and sank instantly.

Mr. Khuat Viet Hung directed the search for the remaining victims in the shipwreck. |
Mr. Hoang Hong Giang said: According to regulations, with ship NB 2434, only crew members are allowed on board, but in reality this is a family including women and children, so when an accident occurs, the consequences are very tragic.
"This is an alarming reality because it is very difficult to predict what will happen to the family on the ship when an accident happens," said Mr. Giang.
Mr. Khuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, was present at the scene to direct rescue forces to search for the last victim, Tran Van Duy.
Thai Binh Provincial Police are coordinating with relevant agencies to mobilize forces to continue searching for missing people and investigating the cause of this serious waterway accident.
