Proactive in production to respond to climate change

(Baonghean.vn) - Rising sea levels, extreme weather, record cold, severe drought… are clear signs of climate change. Many farmers and localities have come up with solutions to combat climate change.

The cold spell at the end of last year occurred in many provinces in the North and Central regions, severe drought is continuing in the Central provinces, high tides in the Southern provinces... these are the extremes of the climate, which have strongly affected agricultural production. Therefore, applying scientific and technological advances, choosing suitable crops and livestock breeds... is the way for farmers to continue to "live with" the weather.

To cope with climate change, Mr. Hoang Xuan Tin, Mai Giang hamlet, Quynh Bang commune, Quynh Luu district, has invested billions of dong to build a closed, semi-permanent house to raise shrimp for the third crop indoors. In the wind-proof pond area, he uses an oxygen pump, a water fan, a thermometer, etc., so the shrimp grow well in the winter. Mr. Tin said: The temperature in the closed house is always 2-4 degrees Celsius higher than the outside temperature, so the shrimp grow normally in the winter.

Mr. Nang Minh and his wife in Quynh Bang commune raise 150 foreign sows in a closed house of thousands of square meters. Using air conditioners with fans, steam, and Taiwanese technology, helps to ensure the temperature in the barn is always above or below 30 degrees Celsius, very suitable for imported pigs.

Climate change, hot weather, and prolonged droughts will cause groundwater to be depleted. Therefore, vegetable growers in the coastal areas of Quynh Luu invest in installing sprinkler irrigation systems, which not only save groundwater but also reduce labor and increase irrigation efficiency.

One of the solutions to cope with climate change in coastal areas is to develop mangrove forests by planting mangrove trees at river mouths. Quynh Bang has nearly 20 hectares of riverside land, which is flooded with mangroves every year, of which 14 hectares have been planted with mangrove trees. The remaining area will be assigned to each household for closed planting to prevent erosion, protect the habitat of animals and plants, and balance the marine ecosystem.

Quynh Bang Commune, Quynh Luu District currently has nearly 15 hectares of mangrove forest.

With state capital, Quynh Luu has built 9 km of coastal dykes; localities have planted 300 hectares of mangrove forests. In addition, the locality has also received more than 100 billion VND from the Government to build a drainage system for the coastal area. After completion, the coastal area has shortened the flooding time from 15-20 days previously to 7-10 days, creating favorable conditions for vegetable growers to increase crops. In agricultural production, Quynh Luu also chooses suitable crops to cope with climate change, associated with ensuring productivity and output.

Yen Thanh district specializes in agricultural production, with rice cultivation being the main crop. In order to cope with extreme climate, in recent years, the locality has had many solutions to combat climate change. The most important solution for Yen Thanh is to mobilize human resources every year to dredge canals, irrigation works, especially the drainage system. In addition, Yen Thanh also actively plants forests, reforests bare land, prevents soil erosion, and balances the ecosystem. With over 15,000 hectares of existing planted forests, each year the locality exploits about 1,000 hectares of forest, and wherever they are exploited, people replant them, so the forest area is always guaranteed.
