During the glorious resistance war against the US imperialists of our army and people, Truong Bon was a traffic hub with a particularly important position on National Highway 15A, connecting the vital routes transporting military food and ammunition from the Northern rear to the large front line in the South. During the years from 1964 to 1968, the US Air Force dropped nearly 19,000 bombs of various types and thousands of missiles on this route...

During the war, thousands of hectares of forest were destroyed along National Highway 15A, 211 villages were devastated, hundreds of trucks carrying goods, hundreds of artillery pieces of our army were hit by bombs and set on fire. However, tens of thousands of soldiers, army officers, transport workers, youth volunteers and people still stubbornly held on, braved the rain of bombs to fight the enemy, connect the road, and ensure the road for trucks carrying goods to the front line.
Among them, the youth volunteer force is the main force carrying out the mission on the line. At Truong Bon, the youth volunteer force overcame the rain of bombs and bullets, regardless of hardships and sacrifices to observe and warn American aircraft; together with the engineering force to defuse unexploded bombs, fill bomb craters, and ensure the road is clear for shipments of aid to the South. At Truong Bon, more than 1,240 cadres, soldiers, militia, youth volunteers, and workers in the Transport sector sacrificed their lives, including 372 youth volunteers.

Among them, there were 13 youth volunteers from the Steel Squad of Company 317, Nghe An Youth Volunteers. In the early morning of October 31, 1968, just a few hours before the US was forced to declare a halt to bombing the North, 13 out of 14 youth volunteers fell while on duty filling bomb craters after a fierce enemy bombing raid in Truong Bon. Most of those who died had completed their duties, had decided to go to the army, some had decided to go to school, some had set wedding dates... They volunteered to go to the scene with their unit to carry out their duties with the spirit of "One hour at the unit is one hour at the scene", "No regrets about blood and bones until the road is cleared".
The place name Truong Bon and the heroic sacrifice of 13 Truong Bon youth volunteers, representing 43,000 youth volunteers of Nghe An province and hundreds of thousands of youth volunteers nationwide who devoted their youth and blood to peace and national unification. Their sacrifices have become a memorable milestone, a legend about the indomitable will and resilience of our army and people in the cause of building and protecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Fatherland.
