Experts assess Ukraine's call for Germany to sanction Russia
The expert commented on the statement of Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrei Melnik, saying that Kiev will ask Germany to impose new "Hamburg" sanctions against Moscow if Russia does not immediately release the Ukrainian sailors detained after the incident in the Kerch Strait.
"It is strange to see Ukrainian politicians now trying to turn this story into an anti-Russian accusation," said Vladimir Shapovalov, deputy director of the Institute of History and Politics at Moscow State Pedagogical University.

According to him, it is an unserious accusation, continuing the deadlocked policy of former Ukrainian President Piotr Poroshenko.
Expert Shapovalov stated that Kiev needs to be ready to negotiate with the self-proclaimed independent republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, implement the Minsk agreements, and abandon political and linguistic repression in order for Ukraine to become a civilized state.
Previously, the United Nations International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea ordered Moscow to release 24 sailors and three Ukrainian Navy ships seized by Russia for violating the Russian border last November in the Kerch Strait.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that in this case the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea cannot be applied and Moscow will continue to defend its position.
