The victim was Michelle Vo, 32 years old, an employee of New York Life insurance company in the Pasadena area, with an office in Glendale, California.

According to NBC, Michelle Vo graduated from Independence High School in San Jose in 2003, and attended UC Davis.

She worked in Mountain View for a while before moving to Southern California.

The Washington Post shares the story of Kody Robertson, an auto parts salesman from Columbus, Ohio, who met her at a bar and was with her in her final moments. According to Kody Robertson, they exchanged jokes and discovered many things in common, such as a love of golf and staying at the Luxor Hotel.

Michelle Vo shared with Kody Robertson that this was her first time attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival and that she recently got into country music.

At around 10:08 p.m., they looked up to see fireworks because they heard what sounded like someone setting off fireworks. Then a second round of gunfire erupted. One bullet went through her left chest.

"She was hit, I saw her fall immediately and she was right next to me, about a foot away," Robertson said. He said he used his body to shield Ms. Vo. When the gunfire seemed to have stopped, he and another man carried her inside.

While Robertson called her name, the other man attempted CPR but got no response.

Robertson called the number Vo had given him earlier and someone eventually answered. Another group of spectators said they had picked up the phone as they ran for the exit and Robertson was able to retrieve it at Planet Hollywood.

By the time Robertson got Ms. Vo's phone, it was full of text messages and voicemails, but he couldn't open it because he didn't have the passcode. A casino employee told him the address of the nearest hospital, and Robertson started walking to the hospital, hoping Ms. Vo had been taken there.

Along the way, he texted his family and friends to let them know he was safe and answered a call to Vo's phone from her sister's husband, Diane Hawkins, 40, and then continued searching for Michelle Vo until he found her relatives.

After the incident, Diane said: "Kody was our guardian angel. He didn't leave my brother alone."
