Talking to reporters on the afternoon of June 12, DColonel Dao Trong Nghia, Deputy Director of Binh Thuan Provincial Police, said,The disturbance that took place over 3 days (June 10-12) was calculated and planned in advance. "Gasoline and bricks were placed in favorable positions to fight against the authorities." Mr. Nghia said that the case and the accused will be prosecuted after screening and investigation.
According to Colonel Nguyen Van Nhieu, Chief of Staff of Binh Thuan Provincial Police, the situation in the area has stabilized. On the night of June 11, 99 people who had committed extremist acts, throwing rocks at the police in front of the provincial People's Committee headquarters, were detained. Of the 102 people detained since June 10, the police have released 94, and 8 are still under investigation. Thus, as of the afternoon of June 12, Binh Thuan police had detained 107 people.
Chairman of Tuy Phong District People's Committee Huynh Van Dien said that 28 police officers were injured while ensuring security and order in Phan Ri Cua area in recent days.
"In the face of the extremism of hundreds of people, on the afternoon of June 11, the police force at the Fire Police Department headquarters had to withdraw. At night, dozens of people continued to storm the agency, burning cars and smashing offices," Mr. Dien said, adding that many computers, equipment, and fire-fighting supplies were taken away.
According to Mr. Dien, some young people used bricks, stones, and petrol bombs to attack the riot police, burning 12 cars and damaging 2 others. "The incident is still quite complicated, but Highway 1 has been cleared and there is no longer a prolonged traffic jam," Mr. Dien said.
