Covid-19 and the 'scary warning' as thousands of people die in the US and Brazil in one day

The development of the Covid-19 pandemic in the world is still very unpredictable, the US and Latin America, especially Brazil, continue to suffer great losses.

WHO's scary warning

According to the global statistics site Worldometers, in the past 24 hours, Covid-19 continued to attack 213 countries and territories, infecting more than 130,000 new people and taking the lives of over 5,000 people.

Thus, as of 6:00 a.m. on June 6, the world had more than 6.8 million positive cases and more than 397,000 deaths from the new strain of Corona virus. The number of recovered cases reached over 3.3 million.

The US is still at the top of the list. To date, the country has recorded about 1.95 million infections and more than 111,400 deaths. In just 24 hours, the US had more than 28,600 new cases and 1,200 Covid-19 patients died.

These are alarming numbers, in the context of anti-police and anti-racism protests that have erupted in dozens of American cities, causing social distancing to completely collapse to prevent the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, Brazil has surpassed Italy to become the country with the third highest number of Covid-19 deaths in the world. With 915 more deaths from the disease in the past 24 hours, Brazil has now recorded a total of nearly 35,000 unfortunate Covid-19 victims. The number of positive cases has increased by more than 27,000, bringing the total to over 643,000.

Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization (WHO)'s European director, warned that Covid-19 risks a resurgence if countries emerging from the first wave of the pandemic are not cautious in easing restrictions.

The official reiterated WHO's key message: Even if the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be under control, its threat persists.

He pointed out that the risk of a second wave of the epidemic would be "extremely destructive" if outbreaks were not well contained and isolated.

American billionaires get richer

According to a new report by the Institute for Policy Studies, despite the Covid-19 pandemic raging everywhere, the assets of billionaires in this country have increased by 565 billion USD since March 18.

The report puts the total wealth of billionaires at $3.5 trillion, up 19% from the start of the pandemic.

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos alone added $36.2 billion to his fortune as of March 18, the day Forbes released its 2020 Global Billionaires Survey, which also coincided with the start of lockdowns across the US.

The main reason is that despite the pandemic spreading everywhere, the stock market has still risen because large companies have "taken action" promptly such as cutting interest rates and pledging unlimited amounts of bonds. Some companies have even thrived, typically Amazon, with a stock price up 47% from its mid-March low.
