(Baonghean.vn) – Less than 500m from Vinh city center, the temporary fishing village along Vinh river is like a completely different world.
The fishing village has 7 households with nearly 40 people, of which 6 households live in temporary tents set up on the riverbank, and 1 household lives on a boat moored nearby. |
Entering the fishing village, one feels like one is lost in an ethnic minority village with a row of thatched houses on stilts close together... |
In 1978, Hoang Chuc followed his parents from Quang Binh to here when he was only 3 years old. Now he has 4 children, the oldest is 16 years old, the youngest is nearly 2 years old and is the only family living on a boat. |
In the fishing village, these families have been here for 30-40 years. Today, many families have three generations living under one roof. |
To get to these houses, one usually has to go through a bamboo walkway under the floor. When the water rises, they go through the upstairs windows. |
Everyone here uses Vinh river water for washing and bathing, and drinking water comes from a well drilled by a household in the village. |
Every day, in the evening, the men in the family go fishing and return at dawn. While their wives take the fish to the market, they take a nap. |
As for the women, in addition to going to the market, they also help their husbands and children mend torn nets every night. |
Adults are busy with making a living so children here often play alone. |
Nguyen The Phong (9 years old) just got home from school and hurriedly went upstairs to change clothes to help his mother prepare for his father to go to work at night. |
Temporary houses, children with unfinished education, many births, unstable economy because the main source of income depends on fishing on Vinh River, so the lives of these families are extremely difficult. |
Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc - a resident of the fishing village said: Before, there were still many fish in Vinh River so life was better, but now there are fewer fish due to the water source and many people use electric shock to catch fish, so the fish have decreased a lot, life has become more and more difficult. |
