Crimea will have to be recognized as Russian, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said in an interview with Aachener Nachrichten.

"This is a fact that will have to be recognized. Crimea used to belong to Russia but in 1954 the peninsula became a gift from Soviet leader Khrushchev to Ukraine at that time.
He also stressed that Europe needs to restore cooperation with Moscow, adding that Russia is its closest neighbor and there will be no lasting peace on the continent without it.
Crimea became a region of Russia after a referendum held on the peninsula in March 2014.
