(Baonghean.vn) - The Summer-Autumn crop is the main crop of the year for the people of the remote Na Ngoi commune (Ky Son), but for nearly 2 months now, there has been no heavy rain in the area, the streams have dried up, so there is a serious shortage of water for production.

According to the village chief of Buoc Mu 2 Gia Giong Rua, the whole village has nearly 11.5 hectares of rice with 23 households producing. In previous years, people brought water into the fields to soak the soil and then plowed. However, this year, due to the drought, the stream water has dried up, so people are "waiting for the sky, waiting for water". The lack of water for production has appeared for several seasons now, but this season is the most serious. Mr. Rua's family has had nearly 1 hectare of land left fallow for many years because there is no water for production. Photo: Thanh Phuc

Mr. Gia Giong Rua's explanation: The characteristic of terraced fields is that they are dry for a long time. If the water is not released to soak the fields slowly, the banks of the fields will easily shrink, creating holes. The soil will absorb water quickly but also evaporate easily. Photo: Hoai Thu

The same situation is also happening in Keo Bac and Xieng Xi villages. Photo: Thanh Phuc

The water in the Nan stream has also dried up, making it very difficult to bring water to the fields. Mr. Xong Phai Chia in Buoc Mu village has a field in Keo Bac village with an area of 1 hectare, but for many days he has not been able to bring water to the field. On higher plots, Mr. Chia had to plow, dry the soil, and wait for rain to come to get water for planting. Photo: Hoai Thu

Mr. Xong Cha Tenh - Head of Keo Bac village said: Khe Nan is the stream with the most abundant water reserves in the commune. However, this year, there has been a severe drought since the beginning of the season, so the water level has dropped, about 20cm lower than last year. Now people only provide water for sowing rice, but for water for farming, they have to wait for rain. Photo: Thanh Phuc

The whole commune has 336 hectares of rice fields, providing food for the people. The entire irrigation for this area depends on the streams: Pu Kha, Ca Noi, Khe Nan, Huoi Phang, Ca Nam. However, the water level in the streams has dropped to an alarming level, it is expected that this crop will have a serious shortage of water for production. Photo: Hoai Thu

Many fields have been plowed and harrowed but have to be left to dry because there is not enough water to plant seeds. "Because we are near the stream, we can still get water, but there is not much water, and the sun is very strong. If we get water, the water will evaporate before it can soak in, and the thick mud combined with high temperatures will not allow the seeds to germinate," said Mr. Xong Ba Sau - Head of Xieng Xi village. Mr. Lau Ba Cho - Vice Chairman of Na Ngoi Commune People's Committee, said: "Up to now, people in Na Ngoi commune have only grown one crop, ensuring food for the whole year. However, from the beginning of the season, with such a severe drought, it is very dangerous. Currently, the commune is propagating to people to take turns releasing water into the fields in each area, not to bring water in massively. In the long term, people will be encouraged to switch to the main spring crop to avoid drought".
