With Hellen Thuy's victory being attributed to Dam Vinh Hung's large fan base, the "King of Vietnamese Music" and his student received a lot of criticism from the public.

Dam Vinh Hung shared with the press after the final night of Bolero Idol 2017.

Hellen Thuy - Dam Vinh Hung's favorite student became the champion of the Bolero Idol 2017 contest on the evening of June 15. However, most opinions said that Hellen Thuy did not deserve the highest position. She won thanks to the number of text messages voted by Dam Vinh Hung's fans. Some even suggested that the title "Bolero Champion 2017" should be changed to "Text Message Champion".

Responding to mixed opinions from the public, Dam Vinh Hung said he was too familiar with compliments and criticisms and had anticipated this. Responding to the press, he said: “Of course, everywhere there are compliments, criticisms, and mixed comments. In Vietnam, any beauty queen or contestant who wins the championship is scrutinized and under pressure from public opinion. Then fans of those who do not win the prize also criticize in all kinds of ways. I am too familiar with it. Showbiz is like that and we have anticipated this. I teach my students to have the courage to overcome such public opinions. If you live in showbiz and stay quiet, then go to sleep. In this profession, you have to know how to cope, even know how to create waves to respond to those rumors.”

With a defiant attitude, Dam Vinh Hung affirmed that no one has the right to change Hellen Thuy's victory. "And I affirm that no one has the right to change this glory, even if there are 100 million opinions or comments. Criticism is the personal right of each person, but no one has the right to deny the glory of our teachers and students" - Dam Vinh Hung declared.

Dam Vinh Hung’s comments are not entirely unreasonable. In reality, any competition, to a greater or lesser extent, will cause controversy and have opposing opinions. However, if it is at a 50-50 level, it can be temporarily accepted. But if a result, a victory that has more than 90% opposition, then perhaps we should look at it more seriously.

I wonder how a contestant who "hugs" the winning cup but is booed by the audience will continue his singing career? If he is really talented, it will take him a long time to make the audience turn around, love him again and affirm his position. On the contrary, the failure he has to accept is much more humiliating and bitter.

If competitions and game shows were still based entirely on text message votes, it would be unfair to the remaining contestants. Of course, a coach with a large fan base would have the upper hand. As long as emotional and financial factors dominate, game shows will continue to be controversial and even boycotted by audiences.
