Nghi Lien Commune currently has 7 households experimenting with growing okra in their vegetable gardens. This is one of the safe clean vegetables, sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and in coordination with the Bibi Green Clean Food Company to purchase for people. Because okra is low cost, requires little irrigation water, and brings stable income, many farmers are constantly expanding their acreage. Photo: Phuong Thuy

Okra is a vegetable in the cotton family, so it is easy to grow, the crop schedule is not strict, it is drought-resistant, and has a short growth period. Okra is planted in June and July every year. After 1.5 - 2 months of sowing, the plant begins to flower. The okra harvest period lasts about 2 months, depending on the care regime. Therefore, farmers in Nghi Lien commune, although new to intensive cultivation of this crop, do not have much difficulty. Photo: Phuong Thuy

Mr. Le Ba Duc (Hamlet 3, Nghi Lien Commune) has been growing okra for more than 3 years now and said: “My family has 4 sao of clean vegetables such as squash, squash, amaranth, water spinach... In 2014, Bibi Green Clean Food Company introduced this new type of okra. The family tested planting on 100m2, and it could be harvested in just 50 days. The advantage is that okra is not afraid of weeds, not pests, and the fruit is continuously broken. Seeing the effectiveness and economic value, in 2017 my family expanded the area to 150m2; on average, each crop, the family earns about 5 - 6 million VND”. Photo by Phuong Thuy

Currently, the company is coming to the house to buy the product at the price of 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, at times the price is up to 25,000 VND/kg. Photo: Phuong Thuy
