Young man sentenced to 9 years in prison for beating someone to death after a traffic collision
After being hit in the leg by a man holding a baseball bat after a traffic collision, the young man grabbed the bat and hit the victim back, causing him to fall backwards onto the road, sustaining a traumatic brain injury that led to his death.
At the end of the first-instance online criminal trial on the afternoon of March 11, the People's Court of Phu Yen province sentenced defendant Le Chi Dat (born in 1995, residing in Trung Hoa quarter, Cung Son town, Son Hoa district, Phu Yen) to 9 years in prison for murder under Clause 2, Article 123, Penal Code. In addition to the prison sentence, the Court also ordered Le Chi Dat to pay 340 million VND in compensation and provide 6 million VND per month for the victim's 2 young children until they reach adulthood.
According to the case file, at around 10:00 p.m. on May 21, 2023, Dat was driving a motorbike on Le Duan Street, Tuy Hoa City (Phu Yen) in the South-North direction. When he reached Ward 7, he collided with a car driven by Mr. Le Minh Hoang (born in 1969, residing in Ward 1, Tuy Hoa City) in the opposite direction. The collision caused Dat to fly onto the hood of the car and fall onto the road. Due to a sore leg, Dat sat in the front of the car.
Mr. Hoang got out of the car and the two argued. Seeing Mr. Hoang pick up his phone, Dat shouted that his phone had been stolen. When Mr. Hoang opened the trunk of the car and took out a baseball bat to hit him in the thigh, Dat rushed forward to wrestle, grabbed the bat and hit Mr. Hoang in the head, causing the victim to fall backwards onto the street, suffer a traumatic brain injury, become unconscious and die while being treated at the hospital.
