Ballpoint pen tip in bronchus of 7 year old boy

(Baonghean.vn)-On March 14, Nghe An General Hospital successfully performed an endoscopy to remove a foreign object, a ballpoint pen tip, that had been stuck in the airway of a boy named Nguyen Trung Quan (7 years old, Quynh Luu) for 4 days.

Baby Quan was admitted to the hospital at noon the same day with mild difficulty breathing, wheezing, and rales in his lungs. Through medical history, baby Quan said that 4 days ago, while in class, he put the tip of a ballpoint pen in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it. The respiratory doctor ordered an X-ray for the patient, but no contrast was seen. Through clinical examination, he heard many localized wheezing sounds that changed when coughing. Suspecting that the patient had a foreign body in the airway, the doctor ordered an emergency bronchoscopy.

After the foreign object was removed, patient Quan was stable and alert.

Baby Quan was quickly transferred to the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department to perform emergency removal of the foreign body using a flexible bronchoscopy under anesthesia. Through the endoscopy, a ballpoint pen tip nearly 1 cm in diameter was found and removed from the child's bronchus. Immediately after the airway endoscopy and removal of the foreign body, the baby's health condition was stable, alert, and had good respiratory function.
