Fish oil can turn bad fat into good fat

Rich in vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids, fish is considered a heart and brain health food, but in a study conducted by Japanese scientists, it may also play an important role in weight loss.

Specifically, a research team at Kyoto University discovered that fish oil can transform fat-storing cells into fat-burning cells, promising to form a supportive measure for obesity treatment in the future.

In the body of animals in general and humans in particular, there are two types of fat: white fat and brown fat. While brown fat can burn energy and generate heat, white fat stores energy in the form of lipids and this is considered the culprit behind obesity.

Until now, many studies have been conducted to attack the mechanism of formation of these good/bad fat cells and up to now, scientists have discovered many types of proteins, hormones and other environmental factors related to this process, promising to propose a radical solution to obesity.

Scientists have discovered a third type of fat cell in the human body called beige fat.

In 2012, scientists discovered a third type of fat cell in the human body called light brown fat (beige). These cells can also burn fat to release energy similar to brown fat but decline when people reach middle age. That discovery promises to provide a new therapy to treat obesity. And recently, researchers at Kyoto University, Japan have made a new discovery, finding specific foods that help increase the amount of light brown fat.

They then began testing fish oil, a food that has long been touted for its health benefits, to see how it affected the amount of light brown fat. In the experiment, they fed one group of mice a high-fat diet and another group the same amount of fat but with fish oil added. The results showed that the second group gained 5 to 10 percent less weight than the other group, and by the end of the experiment, the mice in the second group had 15 to 25 percent less fat.

The team suggests that fish oil may activate receptors in the digestive tract, stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and converting white fat cells into light brown fat cells. "People often say that Japanese and Mediterranean foods help people live longer, but there has been no good explanation," said study co-author Teruo Kawada of Kyoto University. "Now we have a closer look at the answer to that question."
