“Full tank” - the habit of filling up gas causes many people to get their pockets “pickpocketed” without knowing it
“Full tank” is a familiar phrase for many people when filling up with gas. However, this phrase is a “supportive” phrase for many gas stations to commit fraud.
“Filling the tank to the brim” is one of the common mistakes consumers make when filling up their gas tanks. Because of the fear of spilling, customers often pay attention to the gas tank and not to the pump. Gas stations take advantage of this to steal gas from customers.

Ms. Van, who lives in Cau Giay, said: “Never go to the gas station and ask for a full tank. I myself have been scammed at least 3 times because of this. When I almost fill up the tank, I usually look at the gas tank to see if the gas is overflowing. Taking that opportunity, the gas station attendant immediately lowered the price to 0 and told me it was 80,000 VND, even though I looked and it was only 58,000 VND and when I filled up my tank, it was only 70,000 VND. Furthermore, I still had 1/3 of the gas left. Even though I knew I was scammed, I couldn't do anything about it.”
Another equally dangerous trick is “stacking the gas tank”, this trick is used against scooter customers, especially those who are distracted and not concentrating while filling up their gas tank.
With this method, after filling up a customer's tank, the employee should reset the machine to 0 to pump gas for another vehicle. But they don't do it and instead pour it over the amount of gas that was just filled. For example, a customer just filled up 20,000 VND, after filling up, another customer fills up 100,000 VND, the employee will pull the cord and press the trigger to continue pumping until the gas reaches 100,000 VND, not 120,000 VND.
If a customer discovers this, the gas station attendant will apologize and say that the person inside forgot to dial the number. To avoid this situation, consumers should pay attention and observe when filling up their gas tank and should fill up at reputable gas stations.
