(Baonghean.vn) - The development of the Internet, mobile phones, social networks and many other concerns have made today's youth less interested in books. Therefore, building and developing a reading culture in schools is extremely necessary, regardless of age.

Bring books to poor students

Children's Day and Good Books is an activity in response toVietnam Book and Reading Culture Day(April 21st every year) organized by Xa Luong Kindergarten (Tuong Duong). Although the program only took place on a small scale of a kindergarten, this activity attracted a large number of students, teachers and parents to participate.

The Book Festival also became a cultural festival with many meaningful contents such as creative plays based on the content of children's favorite stories, organizing the Golden Bell contest "to learn about good stories in the preschool education program". By expressing innocently, with the pure perspective of preschool students, the stories are recreated both vividly and intimately, sending many meaningful messages.

In particular, participating in the Golden Bell contest is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of the stories they have learned at school and at home. In this program, for the first time, parents of the school also experienced participating as rescuers.

The Children and Good Books Festival of Xa Luong Kindergarten was more meaningful when the program exhibited and auctioned more than 100 stone paintings made by teachers and children in each class, and donated reading lamps to students in difficult circumstances. Many parents who came to the program also bought paintings to support the school in buying books for the school library and building reading corners at remote schools.

With the characteristics of a mountainous commune in a difficult area of Tan Ky district, having good books and stories still seems to be a distant thing for students in Tan Hop commune. Perhaps because of this, this year's Book Festival and Reading Culture of Tan Hop Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities was organized with the theme "Giving good books - buying real books".

In this program, in addition to the classes organizing exhibitions and introducing good books, the school also mobilizes parents, students and teachers to donate books to the school library.

Speaking more about this, teacher Tran Quoc Manh - Principal of the school said: Our school has more than 700 students at both primary and secondary levels, the children are ethnic minorities, children from poor and near-poor households account for more than 50%. Their circumstances are very difficult because many of their parents work far away, they live with their grandparents, so they are not paid much attention to their spiritual life.

Apart from going to school, when they come home, they mainly watch TV, play on their phones or go to the river or stream. Reading is also very rare, because they do not have the habit of reading, and do not have books to study. This has a significant impact on their development.

In order to encourage students to love reading and create a reading space for them at school, in recent years Tan Hop Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities has also built a school library.

However, due to the difficult conditions of the school and lack of funds for investment, the number of books is not much, and the books suitable for the students' age are even less.

With the implementation of the program “Give good books – buy real books”, for the first time the school organized a book donation on a school-wide scale. After this program, more than 700 books were donated and that will be an invaluable source of knowledge for the school’s students to have the opportunity to read, explore and gradually help the school develop a reading culture.

Building a reading culture in schools

Nguyen Duy Trinh High School Library (Nghi Loc) is one of the libraries that has been invested quite systematically in terms of reading room, number of books and reading space for students to experience. Since the library started operating, it has also become a regular destination for teachers and students of the school.

Coming to the library, in addition to finding supplementary materials for subjects and books for school age, students of the school can also read many books written and donated by former students of the school. Through each book and shared stories, students not only gain more knowledge but also learn many valuable lessons, meaningful for their journey to adulthood.

Another special feature of the library of Nguyen Duy Trinh High School is that in addition to thousands of valuable books, the school also equips many computers in the reading room so that students can access and search for information online. In the near future, the school is also planning to connect with the provincial library to build an electronic library to help students exploit e-book resources.

Reading books for school-age children will enrich their souls and help them gain many other skills, supplementing their studies. In our school, library activities are maintained regularly and thanks to the habit of reading books, children will limit playing games, using mobile phones and move towards healthier, more practical activities.

If in the past, school libraries were mainly textbooks and reference books to supplement learning and did not attract students, now more and more schools are interested in building school libraries, turning libraries into a real reading culture space.

At Nguyen Sy Sach High School (Thanh Chuong), since the beginning of this school year, after the school launched the "Intelligence House" model - the 151st member of the global "Intelligence House" system, this place has become an unlimited learning space for the school's students.

This is because thousands of books in many different fields are currently stored here. Coming here, students can not only read books but also participate in many other activities thanks to regular exchanges and connections in person or online with many experts in many different topics.

In addition to building a reading culture space, the school also established a book club and reading culture with many activities taking place regularly. Most recently, at the end of March, the school organized a summary writing session with the theme "Lifelong learning - the flow of the times".

Previously, after nearly 2 months of launching, Nguyen Sy Sach High School also successfully organized the school-level "Reading Culture" contest with the theme "Vietnam - Country - People".

In 170 entries (including articles and videos), the school's students had the opportunity to express their thoughts through the books they had read such as "The Road to the Legendary Truong Bon", "A Fierce Childhood", "Letters from Vietnam Wartime", "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary", "The Sorrow of War"... From these stories, the students made connections with themselves and learned many meaningful lessons, expressing their aspirations for peace and happiness.

We try to create many intellectual playgrounds in schools to develop a reading culture among students. In addition to the values that books bring, these are also experiences for students to express themselves, express their emotions and contribute to nurturing dreams and ambitions for the future.
