Nghe An salt farmers stick to their fields to produce salt

(Baonghean.vn) -The sunny weather is creating favorable conditions for salt farmers in Quynh Luu district to produce salt. Although the price of salt is low, most people are still actively sticking to the salt fields to produce salt and earn income from their traditional occupation.

The whole An Hoa commune has 145 hectares of salt production area, concentrated in the villages of Hong Phong, Tan An, Nam Tien, Tan Thinh... Salt making accounts for 50% of the total labor force in the commune and is a traditional occupation of the locality.

Currently, it is the main season for salt production, salt farmers are actively going to the fields to produce, so the salt output is high. The average annual salt output of the whole commune is 19 - 20 thousand tons/year.

Ms. Vu Thi Tinh in Tan Thang village said: The weather is sunny so salt production is quite easy, each day she produces 150 kg of salt for an income of over 150 thousand VND/day. Since the salt season started (in 4 months), the family has earned over 6 million VND.

According to salt farmers, if the weather is sunny, they can produce an average of 150 kg of salt per day. With the current price of salt ranging from 1,000 VND - 1,200 VND/kg, people earn 150,000 to 170,000 VND/day/2 workers. For the people, although the price of salt is low, because this is a traditional profession, they have to stick with it. In addition, the production cost is not high, so everyone actively sticks with the salt to make salt.

Mr. Tam, a trader in Dien Chau district who went to Quynh Luu to buy salt, said: It is the main season so the salt output of the people is more. Every day, Mr. Tam buys about 200-300 kg of salt from the people, this amount of salt is sold retail in mountainous districts such as Thanh Chuong, Nghia Dan... at the price of 2,000-3,000 VND/kg.

Salt production is a traditional occupation in coastal communes such as Quynh Thuan, Quynh Minh, An Hoa, Quynh Tho... In recent years, although salt production is still high, salt prices are low, so many areas of the salt fields have been abandoned. The main salt producers are now the elderly and children, while the rest of the young people have gone to work far away. Mr. Nguyen Van Luc - Chairman of Quynh Tho Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune has 60.5 hectares of salt area, in the condition of low salt price, the ability to produce salt has decreased, the locality is encouraging people to stick to the salt production area to produce salt. At the same time, directing Luu Quang Cooperative to collect all the salt produced by the people so that people can feel secure in production.

The entire Quynh Luu district has 589 hectares of salt production area, with an annual salt output of 67 to 68 thousand tons/year. Currently, in Quynh Luu district, there are about 30 establishments providing salt purchasing services at the fields for local people. Along with that, many cooperatives in the salt production area have committed to consuming products for local people, which is a condition and motivation for local people to feel secure in production and stick to the traditional salt profession of the locality.
